Open Source Licenses

Filed under: Uncategorized — ioconnor @ 3:07 pm

While exploring making my own Debian packages yesterday I was confronted with having to choose between which open source license I would write my code under. They presented three links. I normally ignore these licenses. I’m the type who think I’ll do what ever I want regardless of the license. So being forced to choose one of those three licenses sent me for a loop. I googled but could not find anything particularly useful to help me decide. I finally chose “artistic”. However today while reading through my RSS news I came across this article.
http://itmanagement.earthweb.com/osrc/article.php/3803101/Bruce-Perens-How-Many-Open-Source-Licenses-Do-You-Need.htm

I don’t even understand, or begin to understand, what the article says. I hope someday I will. Since I’m forced to choose and it seems like this author knows more than anybody else so I’ll follow his lead and choose “Affero GPL3“. As time permits I’ll read up on the details. (I’ve tried reading the license but can’t even make it through the preamble. Boring…)
